Beyond the Surface

Where Portrait Meets Nature

An artistic photography exhibition by Valentina Gagarina

Beyond the Surface is an artistic photography project created on the Greek island of Naxos, exploring the unique connection between people, nature, and the places we call home.

Through ten images, ten individual stories unfold. Each photograph brings together a portrait and the surrounding landscape, blending human presence with the sea, mountains, villages, and natural elements of the island. Using double exposure and carefully composed layers, the images go beyond traditional portraiture to reveal the deeper bond between a person and their environment.

Every photograph tells a story: of belonging, of protecting nature, of finding home, of simplicity, and of the people whose lives are inseparable from the island. Together, these stories form a personal artistic interpretation of Naxos and the people who give it its identity.

The exhibition also extends beyond still photography through moving projections, where portraits merge with short films of water, landscapes, and everyday life.

Beyond the Surface is an invitation to look closer, to discover the stories behind the faces, and to reflect on the connection between who we are and the world around us.
